a shootout between officers and the ex l.a. cop on the run. an exclusive look on the firing lines as a cbs reporter gives us the play by play. the cabin goes up in flames. >> good evening on this special edition of kpix5 news, i'm ken bastida. >> and i'm elizabeth cook. it looks like it's finally over. fugitive excop, christopher dorner is dead. his body is inside a burned out cabin near big bear. cbs reporter, teresa garcia is near big bear with what the end of a dramatic day. teresa. >> reporter: it is expected to take several hours, if not days to process all of the evidence.

investigators are saying they still need to confirm whether the body inside is indeed that of the suspect, christopher dorner, and cbs law enforcement sources are telling us there is a body inside that cabin, which burned for at least two hours. sources tell cbs news that they believe christopher dorner's body is inside a cabin. but los angeles police say it is still too hot to go inside to confirm his death. the cabin went up in flames during the standoff with law enforcement. police swarmed the area and cornered dorner, who had apparently been hiding out in the mountains. when they arrived, the bullets started flying. cbs reporter, carter evans, was near the scene and recorded the gun battle on his cell phone. >> i hear some screaming. >> two deputies were shot in the exchange, one of them di. officers were responding to a

report of a man matching dorner's description, driving a stolen vehicle in the mountains. >> he crashed the car and took off into the forest. >> officers had focused their search for dorner in big bear after they found his burned out truck last week. the former l.a.p.d. officer had been on the run since he allegedly shot and killed three people, including a police officer. authorities planned to enter that burned out cabin once it has cooled down and also is considered safe. los angeles police officials have been telling us there is a lot of live ammunition inside, so those investigators need to proceed cautiously, teresa garcia, now back to you. now teresa, we don't have confirmation once again that dorner was inside that cabin. so are police still patrolling the area with equal intensity? any chance that he could still be on the run? >> reporter: sure. well liz, all indications are that there is a person inside

the cabin. now it's behind me on highway 38 several miles up the road and they do have that road closed off. here's the reason why cbs law enforcement sources and others are saying they believe the body is inside. it has burned down for the most part, but they also had that whole cabin in circles, the entire perimeter. they knew there was someone inside because there was gunfire exchanged and trying to communicate, but they never saw someone exit. the presumption is that someone is in there, and there is a body in there. they still need to go inside and confirm that identity, that it is christopher dornerand no accomplice involved in this. of course, people are feeling that there's relief that this man hunt is coming to an end, but not until they finalize that identity, liz. >> teresa garcia in big bear, thank you. because he was right there when it happened, we want to show you more from cbs reporter, carter evans, tonight.

>> reporter: i hear some screaming. authorities told us we need to stay low for our safety. moments ago, we were caught in the middle of this gunfire between christopher dorner and authorities. we're told the two deputies have been hit by that gunfire. their condition unknown right now. take a look on the other side. you can see police, you can see the s.w.a.t. team. a little down the road, they have dorner cornered in a cabin right now. they are preparing to move in, but it's unknown exactly how they will go about that. time is on authority's side. they shot tear gas inside the building and we haven't heard any gunfire for some time. >> kpix5 reporter will have the latest in a live report at

he also outlined his plan to bring 34,000 troops home from afghanistan by this time next year. that is half the u.s. force there. >> by the end of next year, our war in afghanistan will be over. >> gun laws were also a theme of the night. the president introduced victims of gun violence who joined the first lady and members of congress in the chamber. he says congress owes them a gun bill. >> they deserve a vote. gabby giffords deserves a vote. the families of newtown deserve a vote. >> in a republican response, florida senator, marco rubio, cautioned against higher taxes. >> there's no realistic tax increase that could lower our deficit i by $4 trillion. that's why i hope the president will abandon his obsession with raising taxes and instead of work with us to achieve real growth in our economy. >> this is the beginning of a big push by president obama. he will take his message on the

road with campaign style appearances in three states, north carolina, georgia, and illinois starting tomorrow. and coming up at 11:00, we'll take a closer look at his plans for gun control, one of the more emotional parts of his speech tonight. >> kristen, thank you for that. another big point made by the president immigration reform. you'd think that would be welcome news for bay area latinos, but some latinos cold kit doe what the president said was a bit insulting. >> it was a hard core obama crowd that included janitors and security guards. and this is when they cheered the loudest. >> the time has come to pass comprehensive immigration reform. now is the time to do it. now is the time to get it done. >> the president detailed his plan for a path to citizenship that surprised the people in the room that left many of them scoffing and trading puzzled looks. >> paying taxes and a

meaningful penalty. learning english and going to the back of the line behind the folks trying to come here legally. >> in a group discussion, they called it inhumane and insensitive to families who have been separated by deportation. >> we had to go to the back of the line again. he didn't have to say that. >> what they want is for everybody to pay taxes, but have to go to the end of the line and wait for twenty years, in some cases. backlog of visas is twenty years. >> you're not exactly happy with it, but you'll take it? >> i'll take it. i'll work with it, you know, it's better to work with something than to not have anything at all. >> the gop made history by having senator marco rubio deliver part of the republican response in spanish. all in an effort to appeal to latino voters. >> it's going to take a lot more than speaking spanish for our community to buy into what they are proposing. >> it's easy to see why the republican response was done

chemicals to the flow to get rid of the chlorine to make it safer for the aquatic wildlife. >> though the pipe is still leaking, officials estimate 75 to 100 gallons a minute. one of the big medical mysteries is why so many more kids these days are being diagnosed with autism. >> kpix5's dr. kim tells us women may be able to reduce the risk of having an autistic child by taking a supplement. >> autism is a disorder where early in life, a child's brain doesn't develop normally. a new study finds how folic acid may cut the risk of autism in half. the reduction was seen in women who used the b vitamin before or early on in pregnancy. i spoke to a number of young women and it became clear when it comes to how much folic acid they take. >> i don't know. >> i'm not sure how much i get. >> don't know what that is? >> no.
